Starbound Not Launching on PC?(3 Fixes for the Crash)

A screenshot of Starbound's 2D graphics

There are lots of great reasons to get Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass on PC and being able to play Starbound is one of them. Starbound is a fun action-adventure game that uses 2D graphics and a procedurally generated universe to give players endless exploring. If you want to play Starbound but can’t because the game is not starting on Game Pass or Steam, you have arrived at the right place.

Starbound will not launch on Game Pass or Steam when some of the mods installed are not working properly. The mods add fun gameplay features but if they are not well optimized, Starbound will crash on PC. Therefore, fans of the game need to disable each of the mods one by one to find out which is causing the problem and then uninstall it. An alternative solution is to run Starbound as Admin to override the crash and launch the game.

Fixing Starbound can be a bit more complicated than disabling mods. However, you don’t need to worry because we are here to help.

Why Does Starbound Crash on Launch?

There are three main reasons why Starbound will crash on launch. The first one is mods. Mods are fun and there is no doubt about that, however they can lead to random crashes. The best thing you can do here is to start disabling your Starbound mods one by one and trying to launch the game after each try. This way, you will be able to learn which mod doesn’t function and remove it.

The second reason why Starbound crashes on launch is because your computer is not running on the latest Windows update or has the latest graphics card updates. On the bright side of things, this compatibility issue can be quickly fixed by downloading the updates. Simply type “Updates” in your taskbar’s search section (next to the Windows logo in the bottom left corner) and select the “Check for Updates” option.

Lastly, Starbound will not work on Steam when the launch options are not set properly. This might sound like a tricky problem to fix if you are not tech-savvy but there is no need to worry, we will show you how to do it in a step-by-step guide. Check it out below.

How to Fix Starbound Errors and Make the Game Launch

#1 Disable the Mods

As previously mentioned, installing mods on Starbound can cause the game to crash. Most Starbound fans choose to install mods because they want access to useful features and unique content that they can’t find in the original version of the game. However, not all are developed and optimized by a full-fledged team. This means that they can have bugs in their systems that cause Starbound to crash on launch. Therefore, you should consider removing your mods one after each other to find out which is the culprit.

#2 Try Running the Game in Admin Mode

If Starbound is crashing on launch and you have already removed all installed mods, you should try running the game in Admin mode. Navigate to the launcher of the game (you can find it in the installation directory) and right click on it. Now, select “Run as administrator”. Doing this will override all issues that cause the game to stop launching.

#3 Steam Launch Settings

Even though most people play Starbound via GamePass, a large majority of the community plays via Steam. One issue with Steam is that the launcher often needs to have its launch settings prioritized. Follow the steps below to fix Steam Launch Settings for Starbound.

  • Open Steam;
  • Right click on Starbound in the game library;
  • Choose Properties;
  • Access the “Launch Options” section;
  • Delete all options and run the game again.

Starbound 64-bit Not Launching

One of the most annoying Starbound errors that you can deal with is the “Unable to launch 64-bitclient”. Luckily, this annoying error is super easy to fix. All you have to do is run the game in AAdmin mode, as presented in the #2 step featured above.

How Do I Check Starbound Logs?

If you are running the game on Steam, you can find your Starbound logs by accessing this path in file explorer: “SteamApps/common/Starbound/storage/starbound.log”

If you are running Starbound via GamePass or other launchers, you can access all your logs with the net path “Starbound/storage/starbound.log”.
